Intentions written down with dates attached, which is the only thing separating them from wishes.
The reason to publish plans is that unpublished ones quietly revise themselves. You remember having intended whatever you ended up doing. Writing them down removes that comfort.
Finish the smart home properly
The logging half works. The decision half does not, and the honest reason is that I have not decided what threshold of confidence justifies acting without being asked. That is a design question I have been treating as an engineering question, which is why it has not moved.
Write the things that only exist as conversations
A worrying amount of what I know is stored as the memory of having once explained it to someone. That is not storage. This paper is partly an attempt to fix it, and the backlog is longer than the archive.
Get back to hardware
Everything I have built recently runs on someone else’s board. The robotics years were the last time I was regularly responsible for something that could be measured with an oscilloscope, and I miss the directness of a problem that is either on the bench or not.
Read more slowly
I have been finishing books to have finished them. The reading section of this paper is going to be an accountability mechanism for that, since a review is much harder to write about a book you skimmed.
I will revisit this and mark off what actually happened. The entries that quietly disappear will be the interesting ones.
